NaPoWriMo, Day 3

Today’s prompt:  “In keeping with today’s status as the third day of NaPoWriMo, I challenge you to write a charm – a simple rhyming poem, in the style of a recipe-slash-nursery rhyme. It could be a charm against warts, or against traffic tickets. It could be a charm to bring love, or to bring free pizzas from your local radio station.”

I seriously considered writing a pizza charm.  But what I ended up writing is…not exactly a charm, in the end.


Charm Against a Nervous Breakdown:

Cross  all of your fingers,
Step over every crack.
Pray to God with trembling for the
courage that you lack.

Avoid black cats and ladders,
but don’t swallow all your fear.
That’s what creates anxiety
which builds up year by year.

Recite lists without ceasing,
but don’t choke the need to cry.
if you do for long enough,
your soul begins to die.

If no one ever taught you,
these rules, to heart, to take
You may find, as I did-
The best thing is-to break-
